The humble eggcrate display may seem simple to drive, but it is not that easy to do so. You will need a high current driver to drive each input to the display since it uses incandescent lamps for each pixel.
You will also need to drive the display with a decimal input from BCD. The 74LS42 can do the job.
Should you ever wish to light a dollar sign in the display, extra logic must be added on to the BCD lines to add an extra output. Add a transistor pair to the output of this logic combination as well.
Connect a high power 28 volt supply to the eggcrate display, a 5 volt supply to the digital electronics, and a BCD signal to the inputs. You should see numbers (and a dollar sign, if logic provides) output on the display.
