Flip Dots

What are flip dots?

Flip dots are physical discs on rotors with permanent magnets, with electromagnets that rotate the rotors. One side of the disc is black, and the other side of the disc is a bright color, usually white or fluorescent yellow.

Operation of a flip dot display is similar to that of a vane display, in that pulses of current run through the electromagnet coils to flip the discs. In a matrix of five columns by seven rows of flip dots, these discs are usually multiplexed, and each column's common strobe is activated in sequence, with row data being fed to the set and reset lines of each row.

Are these displays eco-friendly like vane displays are?

Yes they are. No power is needed to store the state of the flip dots.

What kind of controller should I use for these displays?

If it has the capability of outputting data for a dot matrix display, use that. Don't forget to add Darlington stages and the like, as you would with a vane display.
